2010 TdFrancis Winter Edition Finish

Hello TRCC, I hope you are having a good day and at best of health and happiness with the holidays approaching.
You know that saying when we were in grade school on the play areas “you started it and I’ ll finish it.” Same thing here, I want to thank Adobo Velo for starting this fine ride event and TRCC finished it. We showed our colors in the Angeles National Forest on the high mountains.
I came home from work Friday night and wanted to take a nap for 4 hours before the drive down south to Castaic, and I could not sleep at all. It was not the excitement of the ride, but I think it was just the anticipation of the long drive. So, without sleep , at 12 midnight started to prep and pack and by 1 AM left the house for the drive.
The drive was uneventful, just listening to sports news all the way on the radio , I was just south of Gorman at about 5AM , I received a phone call from Mar. This was a good thing because I was starting to feel sleepy on the freeway.
I did not answer his call due to many CHP on the freeway and this area of the Grapevine is tricky.
I called back Mar when I got to Castaic and Renato (Siclista Rider) answers the cell phone and states that Mar is getting ready. So, I put gas in the car and went to Mc Donalds to use the restroom. To my surprise, most of the Adobo Velo Team riders and support were having their morning coffee at about 5:30AM.
Just relaxed on the parking lot and the drove to Castaic Lake gathering area and with an 8 % grade and remember this because this will be the last climb going back to the event. Everybody got ready and Adobo Velo has a team chant before the start which TRCC should start doing also. Everybody was there Luzvimin , Mira Mesa CC, San Fernando Valley Cycling Club and we were there also etc.
The ride was long, lots of climbing and cold. I made all the timed first 3 check points and the fouth check point is to make sure that the rider made it back from Quail Lake.
On the way to Quail Lake, the road was sandy with switchbacks, so you have to be careful. This area is beautiful because of the high desert. Los Angeles area has it all, from the ocean, desert, ski resorts, and forested areas in near proximity.
I had five layers of clothing. Next time, I’m going to buy the brand Body Armour to decrease the weight. Ben and Rod recommended to get this, but did not invest my time to do so. Mar had the right idea of dressing warm , but lite weight as well. I learn as I go and learn from experience. Mar looked like he was 5 pounds lighter for the ride and I think I ate too much from Thanksgiving holiday.
There was a lot of fast riders. Going back was tough, lots of 8% grade on the 62 mile mark and 8% 4 miles long on the 84 to 88 th mile mark. If this is Adobo Velo’s training/riding grounds , then I’m not surprise with their riding abilities.
Some riders did not even make it the first checkpoint, some riders turned around at 2nd checkpoint not wanting the challenge to go to Quail Lake which is 14 miles away. The 3rd checkpoint is located at Quail Lake and lunch is there. I went to Quail Lake (3rd checkpoint) and Rosalie (Adobo Velo) gave me a bowl of arroz caldo (rice pouridge with chicken). The comfort food was good after all the mileages of climbing. I only spent 5 minutes of lunch and got more hydration supply and left to return to more climbing this time back to Castiac.
During the return, had leg cramps, I just slowed down a bit and relaxed but not stopping and had the thought of no surrender and never give up and keep going. Had four cases of leg cramps on the way to check point 4 and I did not stop here and still riding to my best ability (NOTE: at each checkpoint , there is food and hydration supply and your # is checked). Had to continue. Fourty miles to go, and a brief miscellanous (not a checkpoint) stop at Lake Hughes Road for more supply of water and carb powder kindly supplied by Adobo Velo with the whole set up .
Going back was tough with more climbing and going back to the parking area after 97 miles of riding made it more tougher with an 8% grade. I told Rosalie I will do better next time. I will do this ride again in July 2011 summer edition and with sleep the night before the ride. Mar, was correct with the amount training ride that were needed to prepare for this ride. Mar, keep us posted for any future Adobo Velo ride events and MMCC in San Diego.
This ride event to me just disturbed the sleeping lion, so don’t be surprised if I do an extra lap on our training rides. TRCC keep riding and enjoy training. Let’s go!!!

Siclista Classic III

Written By: Cesar on September 26th, 2010

A Million Thanks
On its third year, the unabashed Siclista Classic is again a success. Without further due, we would like to recognize its constituents.

This year, Ramon, also known as (a.k.a) Jack Ibagbaga, is at the helm. He is responsible for duty delegation, resource procurement and logistical mapping. Rodge, a.k.a. Capitan, returns in a capacity as a tenured consultant to the incumbent. Capitan, with his remarkable leadership talent, envisioned this classic ride and led the first two events.

Of course, without the traffic marshals, SAG drivers and safety officers, the East Bay’s treacherous canyons and twisted hills will not be secured. Security and safety are some of the affair’s core competencies and without a doubt are implemented.

The generous donors, be it monetary, equipment and food, thanks a million. You made the word “feast” possible. The abundance of scrumptious food satisfied a peloton of calorie-hungry cyclists. In addition, raffle prizes as well as priceless awards add another dimension of excitement.

Last but not the least important one are the participants. You are our main motivation. We hope that you were best served. Recreational riders and King of the Mountain racers alike, we know that you put a lot of training miles to conquer Sierra. We appreciate your participation and competitive mindset.

Accept our gratitude and congratulations to you!

Tracy Riders at the 3rd Siclista Classic Ride

Tracy Riders at the staging area

Sept 12, 2010

This is the 3rd annual Siclista Classic Ride hosted by Siclista cycling club.I was happy to be at this ride since I thought I had prepared better this time, but…please read on.

As the riders gathered around the staging area, we were greeted by the hosts and served with a delicous ‘Arrozcaldo’. A much needed carbo loading prior to the event. This event was again attended by a large group, considering some other clubs did not made it. Yet the excitement still alive as the dreaded Sierra Climb hunts the first timers and the regulars (like myself).

This supposed to be a fun ride and not a race but some of you know, when there are 2 or more riders on the road…its a race! It was announced that the pace will be set for 18mph…but then as soon as the peloton hit the road you’ll barely see your speed meter went down 20mph.

Everyone has somewhat warmed up by the time we hit Calaveras road. Tracy Riders were preatty much still intact and closer to the front. I was following Uly and Rudy while we were trying to get closer to the main group as much as we can. By the time we hit the inclined section of Calaveras it seems like the speed did not slowed down as I wanted and so there were riders dropping back. Wanting to keep with the lead but to no avail there was some gap created. It was too late to realized Erbin zooming by and was able to bridge the gap. I kind of hesitated but then I jumped ahead to maybe pull the group I’m in. As I chased the lead group I can barely see Reybern and Erbin (I think Manny was there too) but the pace was too high for me to push any further. I even realized that I was still on the big ring and almost reaching my max. In short I did NOT make it across and started to just do my own tempo since the 1st feedzone is just few turns away.

Everyone made it safe and sound on the 1st stop. It was nice to have Dominic and Jesse as our dedicated SAG vehicle. I was able to put all my water bottles and bananas. Even Rod has a chance replace his ZIPP wheels with his spare ones.

Sierra Rd. summit

Sierra Rd summit...

Heading to the foot of Sierra Rd. is another 15miles of winding road of Calaveras. I knew I had to be conservative and save some strenght. So Allen, Rod, Reybern and I along with other riders cruised moderately. Rod had to stop due to a dropped chain (40sec delay). But since we got Dominic following us on his pick-up truck we just did not wait. But Rod surpised me when I saw him next to me by the time we turned left at Piedmont Road. His Tracy-Hayward ride every week surely helped.

At the KOM starting line, honestly I can’t challenge that climb. Only a Rey was the bravest to line-up with the contenders. While most of the non-contenders decided to climb ahead. Manny, Uly and I waited until the group were signalled to go for it. I was happy to climb fairly ok next to Sir Maui. Unfortunately he had trouble with his spare wheels and it was not switching to 25T…it might have been stucked to 21T or 23T. I offered to fix it but since we are grinding up the steep section we kind of lost touch.

Now the inevitable…at 2/3rd of the way past the house near the false summit I felt something from my right leg that I’ve noticed since we started the ride. Oh man, leg cramps on both (the 3rd one was ok:) I had to stop for at least few minutes. Other riders were passing one by one. I can barely see Mar, JT, Uly and Gerry up the corner but no way I can hang on. But since I knew it was only a mile or so I tried to recover and eventually made it up the summit. My condition was not up to my expectation this time. I thought I could do better. Kudos to Reybern, I think he did well. Gerry and JT also did very well considering this was their first time ever to Sierra Rd. Summit. The KOM winner posted 23 minute (I think).

Coming back was not hard but it wasn’t any easier. The group had to head down Sierra Rd due to road construction along Feller Rd. Although some riders went ahead, we regrouped at the corner of Piedmont until we saw about 20+ riders with us. We told Reybern to pace us 18mph. Not even reaching Scotts Rd, we found ourselves to be just ~7 riders (Allen, Ilde, Raysam, Reybern, Mar, myself and I think it was Ilde’s friend). I guess Reybern’s pace was too much for most of us. By the time we turned at Warren we got separated. I dropped back so did Allen then the rest went ahead of us (whaaa!). Even Sir Maui(from way back…true champion) passed us on the that short climb and we could not even follow. Basically that’s most of the composition all the way to the Park.

I thought TracyRiders did very well and showed numbers in every invitational ride. We just keep doing what we love which is to ride safely and have fun. Thanks to Siclista club and friends for organizing this annual group ride.

I am Allan A and I chose to RIDE!
